Scenic Drives around Sandpoint, Idaho

Sandpoint offers adventurers breathtaking views of surrounding mountains and lakes, as well as many varieties of wildlife and native flora. Vast sunsets which stretch for miles as well as scenic overlooks of lands left virtually unchanged for centuries are within easy driving distance.

The photograph above was taken on July 20th 2008 from the top of Baldy Mountain in Sandpoint.  The view is to the east looking at Sandpoint and Lake Pend Oreille.  In the distance is Hope and Clark Fork, Idaho. The best part is, these drives could hardly be considered difficult. Just hop on your four-wheeler (or motorcycle) and find a hill to climb!

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge

Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge is located in Idaho's Panhandle approximately 20 miles south of the Canadian border and 5 miles west of Bonners Ferry, Idaho. This 2,774 acre refuge was established in 1965, primarily to provide an important habitat as well as resting area for migrating waterfowl.

Over 300 different species of wildlife can be found on Kootenai National Wildlife Refuge, indicating the richness and diversity this area holds. The refuge not only serves as valuable habitat for resident and
migratory wildlife, but provides a nice stopping point for visitors to get out and enjoy some of the vast natural beauty Boundary County has to offer.

Selkirk Loop

The International Selkirk Loop offers four seasons of adventure. It is a 280 mile scenic drive exploring Idaho, Washington, and British Columbia with two dozen vibrant towns and art communities along the way. The loop encircles the Selkirk Mountain Range and offers the longest and shortest free ferry rides in the world. In addition, there are many recreational, cultural, and historical attractions and events.
